Prescription Pills For Anxiety – What You Need to Know
There are many prescription pills for anxiety available on the market today. Before you start taking a drug to treat feelings of anxiousness, you will want to know more about how these drugs work and if there are any side effects or complications. In this article, you will learn what you need to know to make an informed decision for yourself.
There are three types of anti-anxiety medications available on the market today. Valium is a drug that has been around for a long time and belongs to the benzodiazepines class of drugs. Other benzodiazepines include Klonopin, Xanax and Ativan. Although these drugs work quickly, there are not without their side effects which can include confused thinking, stomach issues, forgetfulness and poor reflexes. The side effects are due to the way that benzodiazepines work: they slow the brain. The premise is that by slowing the brain, the drug stops panic attacks. While obviously this works, it leads to other complications.
Another type of anxiety pill is the beta blocker. Developed to treat heart issues, it was discovered that this class of drug also relieves feelings of anxiousness because they block stress hormones in the brain. These medications are often prescribed for those who have stage fright and the overwhelming performance anxiety that is a result of it. Although these drugs do soothe the nervous system, they also leave you feeling passionless and flat. So if you are a performer, they take the zing out of your performance in much the same way that they can take the zing out of life. Other side effects can include dizziness, abnormally slow heart beat and gastrointestinal issues. They can also make you feel sleepy.
The third type of pills for anxiety are antidepressants like Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac and Lexapro. These drugs do not take effect right away; they take time to build up in your system before you can feel them work. Although some people believe that these drugs help “take the edge off”, the cost is all the side effects including headaches, sleepiness, sexual performance problems, anxiety (isn’t it ironic that a drug designed to treat anxiety can worsen it?), impulsivity and weight gain.
Since pills for anxiety can have side effects that reduce the quality of life, countless people around the world, especially in progressive countries like Germany, have turned to natural remedies instead. Although natural remedies can have side effects, they are minimal when compared to the side effects of prescription drugs and of course, most people do very well on them. Don’t choose just any old remedy because they are not all created equal.
Look for a remedy that contains ingredients that are proven to work. Ingredients like Passion Flower and St. John’s Wort have been used for centuries as natural pills for anxiety that calm nerves and create a relaxed sense of awareness without all the risks and complications of prescription medications.
In addition to taking a natural remedy instead of a prescription anxiety pill, it also helps to eat a healthy diet. Years of living in chronic anxiety can have a damaging effect on the brain and eating right and taking a supplement will start to heal this damage. Focus on drinking lots of fresh, clean water, eating lean meats, fresh green vegetables, whole grains and fruit in season. Take care of your body and your mind and outlook will improve immeasurably. One day, you will look back on all those years spent living in anxiety and be grateful that you found a healthy way out.
